How to Create DIY Filters for Your Cell Phone

Jan 8, 2012 04:18 PM

In photography, using filters over lenses is a common practice and provides a great way to set the mood or to create an artistic image. The only problem is that they can be quite costly and there currently aren't many available for cell phones specifially. Fortunately, there is a simple solution to this, and all you need are everyday objects that can be found around the house. If you're a purist and don't want to rely on filters provided by camera apps, this is a great way to experiment with different effects and tones for your cell phone photos!

What You Can Use

  • Plastic wrap
  • Colored markers
  • A piece of sheer pantyhose or stockings
  • Sunglasses
  • And of course, you will need your cell phone!

Filter #1: Sunglasses

Simply hold your sunglasses over the lens of your cell phone and snap your photo. Experiment with different shades and see which effect you like best. The possibilities are endless, and each pair of sunglasses will provide its own unique filter.

Filter #2: Plastic Wrap and Markers

Create color filters by using the marker of your choice to color a piece of plastic wrap. Attach the piece of plastic wrap over your lens. Using a rubber band may also be helpful in keeping it in place.

Filter #3: Sheer Pantyhose or Stockings

Using sheer pantyhose or stockings can create a nice dreamlike effect. Cut a square piece of fabric out of an old pair of stockings or pantyhose, stretch it over the lens, and secure it to your camera with rubber bands. Like the sunglasses, you can experiment with different tones of fabric to find the tone that you enjoy.
